Shanghai Optics Institute found the earliest beryl gemstone beading in China

Recently, the Science and Technology Archaeological Center of the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has used portable Raman spectroscopy and portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer to obtain important findings in the in-situ non-destructive analysis of the collection of jade and jade beads and glass in the Hepu Han Dynasty Cultural Museum. Discover a collection of precious gemstones from the Han Dynasty, mainly composed of beryl minerals (such as aquamarine, gold emerald and translucent), garnet (red garnet) minerals and quartz minerals (including Made of amethyst, citrine and chalcedony. Among them, the beryl gemstone was once mistaken for “multi-color crystal beads”, which is the earliest such gemstone bead in China.

Based on the research results of Hepu and other related cultural relics unearthed in other regions, it is believed that most of the gemstone beades analyzed should be imported from Hepu through the route of maritime silk to South Asia or Southeast Asia. The results provide useful information for exploring the exchange of maritime silk roads between early China and South Asia. The non-invasive analysis technique can deepen our insight into the precious cultural heritage and enhance our understanding of the ancient Maritime Silk Road trade network in the dissemination of precious items and the social, political and economic development of the Han Dynasty. The portable non-destructive analysis technology overcomes the damage caused by sampling analysis to the cultural relics, and effectively reduces the potential harm caused by the handling of cultural relics. It has broad application prospects, indicating that the development of optical and spectroscopy non-destructive analysis is of great significance. The results of the study have now been accepted by the Journal of Raman Spectroscopy.
